White Sands National Monument, New Mexico
Posted by Matthew Furman / On Location, Personal Work, Things To Do, Travel
We had some time on our last day of shooting in El Paso a couple weeks ago. So we got up early and drove to White Sands, New Mexico to catch the sunrise. Really glad we did. Such a cool place.

Best Peking Duck In The World
Posted by Matthew Furman / Beijing, Black And White, Food, Personal Work, Travel
I’m back from Beijing and still getting my bearings from the time shift/jet lag. It was a great experience though, and I can’t wait to post some pictures once the job is finished. In the meantime, here are a few from our night out at Dadong Restaurant in Beijing. They’re known for their Peking Duck, and most people agree that they serve the best in the city. They roast the ducks in a wood burning oven, and then the chef comes out and carves it right at the table with the precision of a surgeon. Pretty amazing.
Next time in Beijing definitely check out DaDong Restaurant. Worth every Yuan…

Beijing Trip
Posted by Matthew Furman / Beijing, China, On Location, Personal Work, Travel
I’m on a shoot in Beijing for the next few days. I arrived at 2am last night, and got into the hotel around 3. Tried to force myself to sleep, but was up at 5 and decided to get out and see what was happening around my hotel. This guy was practicing his Tai Chi. Or Kung Fu? Not sure, but I started taking some pictures and at first I thought it was pissing him off, but I think he kind of liked the attention and started really putting on a performance. Maybe if I show up at the same time tomorrow, he’ll ask me to start training with him. Or, maybe I’ve seen too many trailers for the new Karate Kid movie.

Polaroid Time

I found an old pack of polaroid in one of my drawers yesterday. For fun I dusted off the Mamiya RZ and shot a few frames. I like this one of Emma’s favorite shoes.

Happened to drive by this lacrosse field over the weekend. There was this mist that looked really cool, so I jumped out and took some photos.

Shoot What You Love
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, Personal Work, Stories, Videos
Wrapping up my week of personal work with a short video of my daughter Emma. I realize that this is essentially a home movie. But when I think about the reason I even do what I do, I can’t ignore the fact that my kid is a huge inspiration. Many photographer’s have embraced this before, most notably Sally Mann, and more recently one of my favorite photographers Timothy Archibald(check out his beautiful project with his son here)
The hardest part about being a photographer is not understanding f-stops, watts per seconds, layer masks, or any of the other techy shit. It’s finding your visual voice. What makes you different from the other 300,000 photographers out there. I truly believe it’s your point of view. Hence this video, shooting what I love, and loving what I shoot.

Me Gusto Mucho Los Hermanos
Posted by Matthew Furman / Food, Inspiration, Personal Work
For personal work today I went to lunch. And this place instantly transported me to Mexico. Apparently Bourdain’s been there, and they even make there own tortillas on that conveyer belt looking thing below. Such a great experience, and one which I highly recommend. No frills, just good authentic Mexican food. Glad I had my camera with me. For more info go here.

Chinatown Paintings
Posted by Matthew Furman / Chinatown, Inspiration, Personal Work
For the last couple of weeks, I’ve shot a lot of guys in suits. Not complaining, because it’s great to be working and I’ve got a family and bills to pay. But to keep the artistic mojo alive I’m going to try and shoot some personal work every day this week. Or at least be open to things that inspire me.
Like these paintings I saw in Chinatown a couple weekends ago. I really dig them and even bought one. It’s actually hanging in my living room right now. Unless my wife takes it down whenever I leave the house. Which is very possible.

I was there last weekend scoping it out. I’d love to live by a beach. Probably make a lot more pictures that look like this.
For now, still looking.

The Last Time I Was In Wichita
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, On Location, Personal Work, Stories, Travel
Was also the last time I shot film.
I was there shooting a CEO for a business magazine. I knew I’d be done early, and since I couldn’t get a flight back to NY till the next day, I decided to take along my RZ and shoot a roll or two. Fun to switch it up from the digi every once in awhile.
