Shoot with 1DAH
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, Music, On Location, Videos
I did a shoot yesterday with rapper 1DAH for some promotional material he’s working on. Looks great, and a big thanks to Shea Management Group. Here’s a video snippet I shot from his single ‘I’m Hot’. I’ll post some stills next week.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend everybody.

Shoot What You Love
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, Personal Work, Stories, Videos
Wrapping up my week of personal work with a short video of my daughter Emma. I realize that this is essentially a home movie. But when I think about the reason I even do what I do, I can’t ignore the fact that my kid is a huge inspiration. Many photographer’s have embraced this before, most notably Sally Mann, and more recently one of my favorite photographers Timothy Archibald(check out his beautiful project with his son here)
The hardest part about being a photographer is not understanding f-stops, watts per seconds, layer masks, or any of the other techy shit. It’s finding your visual voice. What makes you different from the other 300,000 photographers out there. I truly believe it’s your point of view. Hence this video, shooting what I love, and loving what I shoot.

@ Work With Matt Shields
Posted by Matthew Furman / @ Work Series, Food, Videos
Ever wonder what it’s like to live on a yacht and go from one beautiful island to the next? Well that’s what my friend Matt Shields did for the past 3 years as Jimmy Buffett’s personal chef. He’s just moved to NYC to freelance and work on dry land for a bit, so yesterday I met up with him to ask a few questions about his latest gig. Since it was the day to celebrate all things Irish, he of course made corned beef and hash egg’s benedict, which was unreal.
Big thanks to Matt for taking the time.

Gotham Girls Roller Derby
Posted by Matthew Furman / NYC, On Location, Sports, Things To Do, Videos
I photographed the Gotham Girls a few months back. A mix of studio portraits and some reportage at the championship match. It hasn’t run yet, so I can’t show any of the photos here. But I did put together this little teaser video.
If you’ve never been to a Roller Derby Match, I highly recommend. It’s intense, fun, and even Chevy Chase was in attendance the night I was there.

The Best Way To Enter A City
Posted by Matthew Furman / Cityscape, Night Photography, On Location, Travel, Videos
I always love driving into ‘The City Of Bridges’(it has more than Venice) because as soon as you come out of The Fort Pitt Tunnel you’re hit with this amazing view of the city. So while on a job there last week I thought it would be cool to try and get it on video. Doesn’t really do it justice, but you get the idea.

I’ve always loved this song, but have never seen him perform it. Amazing.
I wish I could make a picture that’s this good.

Portfolio Review
Posted by Matthew Furman / Adorama, Portfolio, Videos, Wonderful Machine
I got a portfolio printed at Adorama so the guys at Wonderful Machine could have on hand to send out. This one’s for editorial clients. I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with the quality. The biggest they have right now is 12×12, which isn’t ideal. But I’m hoping they get some more sizing options because I’ll start doing all my portfolios this way. Here’s a quick flip through…

Plaza Mayor Performers
Posted by Matthew Furman / Madrid, Music, On Location, Personal Work, Videos
Like I mentioned in the last post it’s a major tourist spot in Madrid. So that being said, there’s several street performers wandering around trying to make a Euro. I found the Disney inspired one’s to be a little sad…

This dude wasn’t so bad, but cmon. Really?

And then there were these guys. Who were actually pretty good.
Madrid Madness
Posted by Matthew Furman / Brooklyn, Emma, NYC, Personal Work, Photo Gear, Red Hook, Videos
I’m shooting an Ad Campaign in Madrid this week. Going to try and do some posts from the road, but its a pretty hectic schedule so I might just do a big one with all the details and pics when I get back. I’m going to be shooting a lot of video on this trip since I picked up a 5D MK 2 this week. I even got a Steadicam to keep it looking smooth. That’s right, it’s getting serious over at Furmanfoto Inc. A little note about using a steadicam with the 5D - It’s not easy. I thought, ‘how hard could it be?’ But it really takes some practice. I tried it out yesterday just around the neighborhood while taking Emma for a walk. I didn’t have the shake that I had when shooting handheld, but now I have ‘the wobble’ because I couldn’t quite get that sonofa balanced! Peep the video below to see what I mean. And I promise I won’t always be posting videos of my kid.
Ciao!
The Reason I Didn’t Go Into Filmmaking
Posted by Matthew Furman / Brooklyn, Emma, NYC, On Location, Outtake, Personal Work, Red Hook, Videos
Patience. I realize now that there’s a reason I do what I do. I took a few filmmaking classes while at Penn State, but I remember always getting frustrated with all the bullshit that you have to deal with. Some people love all the pre-production, meetings, scouting, etc. But I just want to get on with the shooting and see the finished product. I ended up doing photography because I love that instant gratification. And it’s probably no accident that I’ve fallen into this type of shooting that most of my shoots are done in under 20 mins. It just seems to suit me.
The video stuff is all new to me, and I love shooting it. However, I spent many hours yesterday trying to edit the footage I have into a music video. Not as easy as I thought. It takes a lot of time and patience to get this stuff worked out. I’m using a program I’m not that familiar with and I’ve got this vision in my head of how I want it to look, but making that a reality …well, a different story.
I am happy with one of the videos I was working on yesterday though. Before I took the camera back I shot my daughter Emma blowing bubbles in front of our apartment. She’s a pro, and nailed it on the first take. No editing needed. My kind of shoot…
Jeremiah In The Studio
Posted by Matthew Furman / Behind The Scenes, Music, NYC, On Location, Outtake, Portrait, Videos
Yesterday I shot singer/songwriter Jeremiah at a studio in Manhattan where he’s working on his upcoming album. I rented a 5D MK II for the day and shot video as well as stills. Its my first attempt in the HD video world and I’m really into it. I used my 50mm 1.4 and tricked the camera into shooting wide open. Now the editing part…and I’m learning as I go as far as that’s concerned. A couple things I did learn while shooting: 1.Get more memory cards. My 4 gig cards filled up really fast shooting video. 2. Get a steady cam(or make one) I hand held everything and ended up with some pretty shaky clips.
All in all though I’m really happy with the result. It’s amazing what that camera can do. I’ll be posting the video on here at a later date. In the meantime, here’s one of the stills.
