Dr. Robert Butler
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, Corporate, Inspiration, On Location, Portrait
I got to meet the Pullitzer Prize winning Dr. Butler when I shot him last month for Investment Advisor Magazine. And it saddened me when I learned today that he had died on July 10th. He was 83 and one of the leading authorities on aging, and had just published his latest book, ‘The Longevity Prescription’. He was also the founder of The National Institute of Aging, which is where we did the shoot.
He had a great sense of humor, and I found him to be an inspiration. I hope I’m half as energetic and full of life as he was when I’m in my eighty’s. Also a real pleasure to work with. Didn’t even blink when I asked if we could do one last shot outside. It was raining a little, and I was worried he wouldn’t be up for it. I’m glad we did, because that’s when I got the shot below.

Dan Ariely for Investment Advisor Magazine
Posted by Matthew Furman / FURMANFOTO, On Location, Portrait, Tearsheet
I flew to down to Durham, NC last month to photograph Dan Ariely for the cover of the April issue of Investment Advisor Magazine. Dan’s the professor of Behavioral Economics at Duke University, and also the author of the NY Times best selling book ‘Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions’.
He’s got a pretty amazing story in which he survived an explosion that left him with 3rd degree burns on 70% of his body. This life changing experience was the basis for his research and what eventually became the book - Predictably Irrational. The book(thanks for the copy Dan) basically lays out why we humans make the mistakes that we do. Interesting read, and one which I’d highly recommend.
And check out the promotional material that he gave me on my way out. A book of matches right? Not exactly. Well played sir, well played.

I shot Bill Pereira the CFO of The IDT Corporation, for the April cover of CFO Magazine. He was a real pleasure to work with, and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. And I have to give a big thanks to Robert over at CFO for the opportunity and creative freedom to do my thing. I’m really happy with the results.

Last time I was in Vegas I shot Michael Frey for The Cigar Report. He’s got several cigar shops there, which is pretty smart because like he says ‘Even if people don’t smoke, they have a cigar in Vegas’.

I shot these Ads for American Airlines this summer. It was a really great shoot that took me from Harlem, to Madrid, and finally Rome. It was for the launch of the new AA site - BlackAtlas. It’s described on the website as ‘A unique online community that offers travel insights from and African-American perspective’. More on this shoot and behind the scenes of the crew etc. next week.
