Dr. Robert Butler
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, Corporate, Inspiration, On Location, Portrait
I got to meet the Pullitzer Prize winning Dr. Butler when I shot him last month for Investment Advisor Magazine. And it saddened me when I learned today that he had died on July 10th. He was 83 and one of the leading authorities on aging, and had just published his latest book, ‘The Longevity Prescription’. He was also the founder of The National Institute of Aging, which is where we did the shoot.
He had a great sense of humor, and I found him to be an inspiration. I hope I’m half as energetic and full of life as he was when I’m in my eighty’s. Also a real pleasure to work with. Didn’t even blink when I asked if we could do one last shot outside. It was raining a little, and I was worried he wouldn’t be up for it. I’m glad we did, because that’s when I got the shot below.

Best Peking Duck In The World
Posted by Matthew Furman / Beijing, Black And White, Food, Personal Work, Travel
I’m back from Beijing and still getting my bearings from the time shift/jet lag. It was a great experience though, and I can’t wait to post some pictures once the job is finished. In the meantime, here are a few from our night out at Dadong Restaurant in Beijing. They’re known for their Peking Duck, and most people agree that they serve the best in the city. They roast the ducks in a wood burning oven, and then the chef comes out and carves it right at the table with the precision of a surgeon. Pretty amazing.
Next time in Beijing definitely check out DaDong Restaurant. Worth every Yuan…

I found an old pack of polaroid in one of my drawers yesterday. For fun I dusted off the Mamiya RZ and shot a few frames. I like this one of Emma’s favorite shoes.

I did a shoot yesterday with rapper 1DAH for some promotional material he’s working on. Looks great, and a big thanks to Shea Management Group. Here’s a video snippet I shot from his single ‘I’m Hot’. I’ll post some stills next week.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend everybody.

The Great Adirondack Brewing Company
Posted by Matthew Furman / @ Work Series, Advertising, Black And White, Brewery, On Location
Here’s a few images from a shoot I did last weekend at The Great Adirondack Brewing Company in Lake Placid, NY. Beautiful weather, warm people, and good beer. My kind of place. And I was able to sit down with head brewer Paul Fryman and pick his brain about getting started in the brewing business, etc. I’m always inspired by people like Paul that get after something they’re passionate about. And a big thanks to my brother Danny(who happens to be the assistant brewer there) for the help and hospitality. Cheers!

Shoot What You Love
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, Personal Work, Stories, Videos
Wrapping up my week of personal work with a short video of my daughter Emma. I realize that this is essentially a home movie. But when I think about the reason I even do what I do, I can’t ignore the fact that my kid is a huge inspiration. Many photographer’s have embraced this before, most notably Sally Mann, and more recently one of my favorite photographers Timothy Archibald(check out his beautiful project with his son here)
The hardest part about being a photographer is not understanding f-stops, watts per seconds, layer masks, or any of the other techy shit. It’s finding your visual voice. What makes you different from the other 300,000 photographers out there. I truly believe it’s your point of view. Hence this video, shooting what I love, and loving what I shoot.

The Last Time I Was In Wichita
Posted by Matthew Furman / Black And White, On Location, Personal Work, Stories, Travel
Was also the last time I shot film.
I was there shooting a CEO for a business magazine. I knew I’d be done early, and since I couldn’t get a flight back to NY till the next day, I decided to take along my RZ and shoot a roll or two. Fun to switch it up from the digi every once in awhile.
